In AutoCAD, file formats control what kind of data the software can read or write. These formats are either native (auto) or supplemental (external).
Auto formats provide the basis for all data used by the drawing, regardless of what software is used to create the drawing. AutoCAD determines which format it needs to read from or write to a file by examining each of the formats listed in the File Formats area of the Create Drawing dialog box. If AutoCAD finds that one of the formats listed in that dialog box is supported by the file type, it will automatically use that format when creating or editing the file. If none of those formats are supported, it will use the supplemental format.
