Equipped with the right applications, a computer can be of great help in virtually any domain of activity. When it comes to designing and precision, no other tool is as accurate as a computer. Moreover, specialized applications such as AutoCAD give you the possibility to design nearly anything ranging from art, to complex mechanical parts or even buildings.
Suitable for business environments and experienced users
After a decent amount of time spent installing the application on your system, you are ready to fire it up. Thanks to the office suite like interface, all of its features are cleverly organized in categories. At a first look, it looks easy enough to use, but the abundance of features it comes equipped with leaves room for second thoughts.
Create 2D and 3D objects
You can make use of basic geometrical shapes to define your objects, as well as draw custom ones. Needless to say that you can take advantage of a multitude of tools that aim to enhance precision. A grid can be enabled so that you can easily snap elements, as well as adding anchor points to fully customize shapes.
With a little imagination and patience on your behalf, nearly anything can be achieved. Available tools allow you to create 3D objects from scratch and have them fully enhanced with high-quality textures. A powerful navigation pane is put at your disposal so that you can carefully position the camera to get a clearer view of the area of interest.
Various export possibilities
Similar to a modern web browser, each project is displayed in its own tab. This comes in handy, especially for comparison views. Moreover, layouts and layers also play important roles, as it makes objects handling a little easier.
Sine the application is not the easiest to carry around, requiring a slightly sophisticated machine to properly run, there are several export options put at your disposal so that the projects itself can be moved around.
Aside from the application specific format, you can save as an image file of multiple types, PDF, FBX and a few more. Additionally, it can be sent via email, directly printed out on a sheet of paper, or even sent to a 3D printing service, if available.
To end with
All in all, AutoCAD remains one of the top applications used by professionals to achieve great precision with projects of nearly any type. It encourages usage with incredible offers for student licenses so you get acquainted with its abundance of features early on. A lot can be said about what it can and can't do, but the true surprise lies in discovering it step-by-step.

File Formats

In AutoCAD, file formats control what kind of data the software can read or write. These formats are either native (auto) or supplemental (external).

Auto formats provide the basis for all data used by the drawing, regardless of what software is used to create the drawing. AutoCAD determines which format it needs to read from or write to a file by examining each of the formats listed in the File Formats area of the Create Drawing dialog box. If AutoCAD finds that one of the formats listed in that dialog box is supported by the file type, it will automatically use that format when creating or editing the file. If none of those formats are supported, it will use the supplemental format.

Types of File Formats

For a general description of file formats and for information on what each format provides, see:

Each format has a unique file extension. For example, if you have a text document with the file extension.txt, that indicates it is a text file.

The following table lists the file formats supported by AutoCAD and what type of data they store.

Supported File Formats File Format Description txt ASCII text. A text file containing a listing of characters or characters and formatting codes.

UTF-16 file

UTF-32 file

ASCII, Unicode, UTF-8, and UTF-16 describe the data types and formatting used in text files. Although AutoCAD can read

Development Environment

Unlike other CAD programs, AutoCAD is not an integrated development environment (IDE) like Visual Studio or Eclipse. A separate program called AutoCAD LT for Windows is the core development environment. This program allows creating new drawing objects, opening existing drawings, exporting drawings to other formats, and most importantly, creates a native binary file format with objects that are organized in a tree of linked objects. AutoCAD LT is also the name of the main program used for design or developing documents. It is available for Microsoft Windows, Linux, and OS X.

In 2012 Autodesk released the AutoCAD Architecture Edition, a subset of the traditional AutoCAD Suite. This product consisted of a subset of features that developers needed for architectural work.

Hardware and software

AutoCAD supports a wide range of physical computer hardware, including PCs and UNIX-based machines such as Apple Macintosh and Linux-based systems. The traditional AutoCAD release model includes one file for each machine: AutoCAD LT for Windows and AutoCAD LT for OS X, followed by AutoCAD for Windows and AutoCAD for OS X.

The releases are available in both stand-alone form and integrated with the Windows operating system. The stand-alone form of AutoCAD is not a full-featured 3D CAD program and is best used as a lightweight 2D CAD program. AutoCAD can run on a variety of operating systems (including Microsoft Windows, Apple Macintosh, and UNIX-based operating systems) and supports Windows-native applications such as Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word. AutoCAD can also be embedded into other software (such as Adobe Illustrator and Powerpoint).

In the traditional AutoCAD release model, a release is a collection of software files, or application bundle, that includes a specific set of components such as model data, drawing objects, and macros or scripts. The traditional release model for AutoCAD does not include all features that are available in other CAD programs.

The first release of AutoCAD had limited functionality and was hard to use, but features were added incrementally as Autodesk experienced growth.

AutoCAD LT (formerly AutoCAD Architecture Edition) uses the same files as AutoCAD and supports many of the same features. It was announced in July 2012 and is designed as a lean CAD solution for architects and engineers. AutoCAD LT provides full 2D drafting and 3D modeling capabilities. It also includes
