Parents often report that they are unable to bond with their children, some struggle to start parenting and many others have difficulty establishing the parent-child relationship. The purpose of this study is to examine parents’ views about the impact of start-up and the factors that assist or hinder parents’ ability to establish a child-parent relationship. Seven parents of children receiving comprehensive multidisciplinary early intervention services participated in in-depth interviews. Transcribed interviews were analysed for themes. Parents experienced a number of challenges to establishing a meaningful child-parent relationship. Parents understood the importance of establishing a child-parent relationship from their own experiences of being parented as children and when they re-parented their children. Parents found that establishing a child-parent relationship was difficult for them because they had previously lost the link with their own parents. Many parents felt a sense of unfamiliarity and lack of knowledge about raising a child. Parents also felt that they were unable to provide for the children in the way they needed. Parents also described a number of strategies they used in their parenting of their children. Parents described how they used both intentional and unintentional strategies to establish a child-parent relationship. Parents experienced a number of challenges to establishing a child-parent relationship.
